Success lies in doing not what others consider to be great but what you consider to be right. —John Gray
John Gray is a multi talented renaissance man who happens to bring comedic relief to the masses that follow him. What makes him unusual is the fact that he uses comedy even when he’s preaching. Matter of fact, he uses all his gifts to build the Kingdom of God and bless people. I got an opportunity to observe him up close and personal at an interview with Karl the Motivator on his live show on KYND called Another Day, Another Chance.
Gray is an actor, singer, author, and minister. We got evidence of the full spectrum of his abilities in the interview. He was accompanied by his beautiful wife Aventer, and they were as authentic in their banter as they are on the Book of John Gray, their new reality shown on OWN network. But most importantly, his goal is to be REAL in every sense of the word in a non-judgmental way.
UrbanDictionary.com defines the word “real” as “Often used by someone to describe themselves as ‘genuine’ or ‘authentic’.” To prove my point, Gray talked about how his elbows were ashy on all the show’s episodes. He didn’t change who he is or attempt to modify his daily lifestyle to accommodate a television audience. He felt the pure portrayal of his everyday life would be more powerful in changing the lives of his viewers. Forming a bridge with everyday people is important to Gray because of his history. He was raised by a single Christian mother and is the only child. At an early age, his innocence was stolen from him and he openly shares how that experience made life difficult for him. John Gray has had REAL experiences that have shaped him to be who he is today and is constantly growing and inspiring others to do likewise.
The Book of John Gray
According to Discovery Communications, ““The Book of John” (working title), is a dramedy docu-series featuring the life of John Gray, associate pastor at Joel Osteen’s world-famous Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. Known for his loud, hilarious, unconventional and gravitating ways, Gray has traveled the world utilizing his gifts of music, comedy and preaching to help bring people together from all walks of life and share the Gospel in his unique and uncompromising way. In the new series Gray will give viewers intimate access into his home life and world renowned ministry as he helps people in his community overcome life challenges, while facing his own relatable struggles as a husband and father. The series is produced by Leftfield Pictures. Executive producers are David George, Jordana Hochman and Joe Weinstock from Leftfield Pictures, with Rich Wilkerson and Jason Kennedy serving as consulting producers.”
Gray told ABC 13, KTRK that “God has been very good to my wife and I, and our children in allowing us through OWN to have a vehicle that people can see, what I think is a necessary, very humanized picture of a family of faith. And it’s also hilarious. It ain’t so deep. We love to have fun, and I think that’s what’s going to set it apart.”
Gray’s talents have taken him on a host of creative journeys from South Africa to Australia and everywhere in between. As an actor, he has appeared on hit T.V. shows such as “Sister, Sister” and Tyler Perry’s, “The House of Payne.” As a musician, has toured with Kirk Franklin and The Family. His ministry gifts have led him to be a youth pastor and now an associate pastor of a mega-church. He is also one of the featured speakers at Megafest 2017 this year, which is hosted by Dallas’ Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Gray has also recently released a new book titled, I Am Number 8: Overlooked and Undervalued, but Not Forgotten by God. This inspirational pastor, packs the Lakewood church house on Wednesday nights because of his unique ability to relate to every man. In a world that can sometimes be so unpredictable, it’s nice to know that there are people like Gray that can still make your heart smile and cause you to laugh so hard that tears run wildly down your face.
